Features of the track include waterfalls, forested valleys, open alpine tops, rich birdlife, lakes and spectacular mountain scenery. The track traverses part of Te Wahipounamu - Southwest New Zealand World Heritage Area.

Over the summer it is one of New Zealand's most popular tramping tracks. During winter and spring, it becomes an alpine crossing; impassable without alpine experience. At times there is high avalanche danger. Sections of the track, however, are still suitable for daywalks.
