Te Urewera National Park contains the largest tract of native forest remaining in the North Island of New Zealand. With over 650 different plant species, it is the most diverse botanical region in the country. Over centuries Maori tribes learned to live in harmony with the dense native forest and harsh conditions. Today the local Maori people still have strong links with the land.
Perched high in the mountains in the heart of the Urewera National Park is Lake Waikaremoana. A track was built around its shores in the 1960s by school children. In recognition of its beautiful scenery and important natural features, the track is classed as one of New Zealand’s "Great Walks".

The Lake Waikaremoana Guided Walk is a four day, 46km, all-inclusive hiking expedition, on one of New Zealand’s famous "Great Walks". Relish the challenge of this wilderness trek while enjoying delicious food, wine, supportive guides and just a small pack. This hike requires a reasonable level of fitness, agility, and a sense of adventure! Staying in authentic bush huts, the Lake Waikaremoana Guided Walk provides a unique and unforgettable New Zealand hiking experience.

The Waikaremoana Discovery Tour is a four day, all-inclusive walking holiday, with a focus on short walks and maximum personal comfort. Three nights are spent in comfortable lodge-style accommodation at Lake Waikaremoana, while the days are spent exploring a variety of walking trails and scenic attractions. The itinerary is flexible and can be tailored to suit all fitness levels and personal interests. Boat cruise, meeting local Maori at their marae, and a hot spring swim are highlights for many people.

The Tongariro Hiking Tour is a four day, all-inclusive hiking vacation featuring amazing day walks through the extraordinary volcanic landscapes of World Heritage Area Tongariro National Park, including the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Comfortable lodgings high in the mountains, with delicious food, wine and experienced guides. Tongariro National Park is a dual listed World Heritage Area – significant cultural heritage combined with arid badlands, crater lakes, sparkling rivers, breath-taking lunar landscapes, pretty beech forest and alpine meadows - makes for an unforgettable walking holiday!

Whirinaki Rainforest Guided Walks

Guide RuiDescription: The rainforests of the world are nature’s pinnacle of achievement, matched only by their importance as the richest storehouses of plant and animal communities on Earth. One of the greatest glories of the central North Island of Aotearoa New Zealand is its rainforests, in their scenic and botanic splendour, of which Whirinaki is supreme. To the early Maori tribes, Whirinaki was the Garden of Eden in an otherwise barren volcanic environment. The indigenous peoples lived there, harvesting the forest for its rich bird and plant life. It was their medicine cabinet and pantry, long before the advent of pharmacies and supermarkets. These ancients uses of this majestic ancient rainforest today form the basis of a programme of eco-cultural walks under the Whirinaki Rainforest Guided Walks banner, experiences that take between one and three days and provide a journey back into tribal tradition in a ‘garden’ setting unlike any other in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Location: Departures from Rotorua or Taupo
Prices: 1 day walk $155 per head, 1 day privately guided walk $285 per head, three day walk $745 per head
