Description: A land-based tour leaving from down-town Wellington twice daily. Within 10 minutes we are out of town, and on a 4 wheel drive track on the beach - let the adventure begin! As the wild South Coast of Wellington unfolds, we pass by the unique Red Rocks, a band of bright red rocks at 210 million years old, amongst the oldest rock in New Zealand. By this stage we are travelling along the sandy beach, so close to the deep blue Pacific that at high tide we have to dodge the waves. After a few more kilometres of rugged and beautiful coast-line, and having seen myriad sea-birds and perhaps some wild goats on the jagged hills, we arrive at Tongue Point, home for up to 600 seals in the middle of winter. (There are fewer in the summer months, but seals are guaranteed all year round). It is also home to Wellington`s famous `Leaning Lighthouse`, built, they say, by an Italian architect!
After a cup of tea or coffee with the seals, and a full description of their fascinating life cycle, the return journey is made, this time overland through a private farm. We climb high above the city to get fabulous views of the South Island mountains, the Tasman and Pacific Ocean, as well as city-scapes. We also travel along Wellington`s biggest fault-line, which can be clearly seen as a slash in the earth`s crust.
In all, a world-class nature tour, where every chance is taken to learn and understand the natural forces at work. The whole tour including the return to downtown Wellington is 2.5 hours.
Location: [map here] Wellington city, and south coast.
Prices: $99 per person, $49.50 for children under 14
Season: Whole year.
