Friendly people to share your time with or visit some of the local attractions. Conveniently located, with Mt Maunganui, Tauranga, and Rotorua only a short drive away. There are a wide selection of stunning SURF beaches here in the Bay of Plenty, with Papamoa Beach, Mount Maunganui, Maketu, and Waihi Beach (to name only a few!)

Guests say it `feels like home` is clean and friendly, comfortable enough to mix with others & enjoy shared dinners and to have the odd party etc.

ACCOMMODATION

Hairy Berry Backpacker Hostel is only a 10 minute walk from the town centre, which offers 2 supermarkets, most banks, a few cafes bars and a cinema.

Most rooms provide 4 to 8 bed dorms - with separate male & female rooms (mixed on request) with shared common areas and facilities.

Private double & twin rooms offer more peace and quiet and shared facilities (kitchen, bathroom & laundry) which are shared with up to 6 other people.

All cooking & clothes washing machine use is included, also Sky TV. Clothes dryers cost $2 for 45 minutes or you can use the washing lines provided. Security cameras installed inside and out (not in privacy areas.... sorry) offer additional security especially if you decide to stay in a tent over the summer months.

There are Internet computers in the common room available 24/7 and setup for most countries. There is also an Internet cafe available for visitors and public and are locked after hours.

In house phones are free for local calls and prepaid calling cards can be used for long distance & international calls.

Stray Bus Travel agency (NZ on-off backpacker tour bus).
Tour desk booking service.

The staff are friendly and work really hard to help people during their stay if looking for fun activities or to find work they are always there to help. They find jobs by networking with employers in the area seeking staff. Transport and training can be also arranged if required. Generally people can get work within a day or so of arriving.

Kiwifruit work is available in the Te Puke area for about 10 months of the year. October through till Feb-March for summer pruning (kiwifruit) then on to the MAIN SEASON beginning in APRIL picking and packing work and later winter pruning which begins in July and lasts until the end of September. There is less work available during the summer months October - March.

Description: This is a great way to see the real rural New Zealand. You will get to know the farmers, Owen & Shelley Williams. Experience the relaxed lifestyle & learn about farming sheep, cattle & forestry.

Our farm is 50% forestry & 50% grazing animals. You will be able to see all the pets & even feed a pet lamb. We have a large modern house with 2 large double rooms and 3 dorm rooms with shared accommodation. There are 2 lounges, 2 bathrooms, shared kitchen facilities, and a pool table.

A separate facility is available with two dorm rooms sleeping four each, shared lounge and kitchen facilities
as well as an outside BBQ area.

We enjoy seeing the visitors from all the different countries & share our experiences with them.

Description: Located conveniently in the inner city the Whakatane Hotel offers Backpacker and short stay accommodation. Rooms are located on the top floor of the hotel, with access to a communal lounge and kitchen, and car parking is available on site.

We are handy to inter city transport and all tourism operators, and it`s just a one minute walk to the Riverside Wharf.

Onsite is a lively Irish Pub – the Craic Bar which offers great food and live entertainment Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Also onsite is the Boiler Room that hosts live bands and DJs, and the Garden Bar which is fabulous in the warmer months.

Backpacker guests are offered 10% off main meals in the Craic Bar – just mention that you found us on the TrueNZ website.
